Abstract
This paper will discuss the roles of ‘surau’ towards the building of classical Muslim scholars at Minangkabau. Hopefully it will bring some inspiration for the mosque development in the future. Before the existence of formal education system in Indonesia, there was informal education institution called ‘surau’ at Minangkabau. ‘Surau’ played significant roles in educating people without exception of their economic and social status through its informal education system. Children aged 7 was asked to sleep at ‘surau’ and they will be made funny by his friends if he still sleeps at home at that age. Special feature of ‘surau’ education system is it was a place for educating and residing at the same time. With the circumstance, it provides a chance for long interaction between teachers and students and at the same time the teachers present their knowledge and experiences to the students. Hence, the training process of Muslim scholars happened naturally through the process. Through the ‘surau’ education system, children will be taught variety of knowledge from basic Islamic teaching to skill based learning. Many classical Muslim scholars i.e. Hamka, Mohammad Natsir, Syeikh Ahmad Khatib, Haji Rasul, Djamil Djambek, Abdullah Ahmad, Inyiak Canduang, AR. Sutan Mansur, KH. Agus Salim and others were the products of ‘surau’ education system.
1. Pendahuluan
Minangkabau adalah bagian dari suku Melayu yang berasal dari Sumatera Barat. Suku Minang terkenal dalam bidang perdagangan dan pemerintahan. Kurang lebih dua pertiga dari jumlah keseluruhan anggota suku ini berada di perantauan. Suku Minang pada masa penjajahan Belanda terkenal sebagai suku yang terpelajar. Sampai sekarang majoriti suku Minang menyukai pendidikan dan perdagangan. Dalam pola keturunan dan pewarisan adat, suku Minang menganut matrilineal. Masyarakat suku Minang mendasarkan adat budayanya pada syariah Islam. "Adat basandi syarak, syarak basandi kitabullah. Syarak mangato adat mamakai."
