Making Gelamai
Gelamai is glutinous rice cooked (grilled) with brown sugar in bamboo Stick. The taste almost similar to Malay dodol
One of the most famous Rao’s (Rawa) food in Gopeng is Gelamai. It is sweet and looked like ‘lemang’ but different color and taste. The main ingredients are glutinous rice, red sugar, and coconut milk.
Firstly, soak glutinous rice in a water about three hours. Then, filter it until it dry. Next, we have to blend the glutinous rice. Secondly, cooked a coconut milk about two hours. Then, we cooled it before we mix with red sugar and pounded glutinous rice. This mixture has to mix in a special pot with made of clay. We leave the mixture about three days . In second and third day, we have to put some fried coconut (kerisik).
After three days, pour the mixture into bamboo and grilled it like ‘lemang’.
Gelamai has served during special occasion like Hari Raya Puasa and Hari Raya Haji. One the unique about this food is we can keep it about a week. Now, this food is rarely found because not many new generation know how to make this food.
